Is A Steamer Or Iron Better

Ironing clothes with a steam iron keeps them crisp and polished, but doing it right prevents fabric damage and ensures a neat finish. Here's a simple guide to mastering the process.

Start by checking the garment's care label. It will indicate the ideal temperature-low for delicates like silk or wool, medium for cotton blends, and high for sturdy fabrics like linen. Set your steam iron accordingly; most have clear settings for different materials.

Fill the iron's water tank with distilled water if using steam (tap water may leave mineral spots). Plug it in and let it heat up until the ready light comes on.

Lay the garment flat on an ironing board, smoothing out wrinkles with your hands. Begin with areas that need the least heat, like collars or cuffs, then move to larger sections. For stubborn creases, press the steam button to release a burst, holding the iron 1–2 inches above the fabric before gently pressing down.

Avoid leaving the iron in one spot, as this can scorch fabric. For knits or stretchy materials, use a pressing cloth between the iron and garment to protect fibers.

Once done, hang the item immediately to preserve the shape. Empty the water tank and store the iron upright to prevent leaks.
